Adaptations to exam arrangements 2022 teacher survey (post-results)

Overview

Ofqual, the regulator of qualifications in England, is surveying teachers, tutors and home-educators who taught students who took GCSE, AS or A level qualifications in summer 2022.

A number of adaptations were made to the assessment arrangements for GCSEs, AS and A levels in 2022, following a joint consultation by the Department for Education (DfE) and Ofqual. This survey will focus on 3 of these adaptations, which are described below.

On 7 February 2022, advance information about the content of GCSE, AS and A level exams (or parts of the exams) in most subjects was published by the exam boards, AQA, Eduqas, OCR and Pearson. The purpose of advance information was to help students focus their revision and make exams less daunting. It was not intended to reduce the amount of content that needed to be studied or assessed for any GCSE, AS or A level qualification.

In addition to advance information, students taking GCSEs in mathematics, physics and combined science did not need to memorise as many formulae or equations as usual. The exam boards provided copies of formulae and equation sheets for use during teaching and learning, and clean copies of these were provided in the exams this summer.

In GCSE English literature, history, ancient history and geography, where advance information was not released, students did not need to study, or be assessed on, as many topics or content areas as usual. Centres were given some choice about the topics or content areas students needed to study in preparation for their exams.

In April and May 2022, before exams began, we surveyed students and teaching staff to gather views about these 3 adaptations whilst revision was taking place. In this current survey we would welcome feedback about these adaptations now that students have received their results.

If you taught, tutored, or home-educated students who took exams for a qualification in summer 2022 in which any of these adaptations were in place, we would appreciate your views.

This survey will remain open until 11.59pm on Wednesday 14 September 2022.
